Low Threshold Use of Collections & Repositories of Instructional Resources - MERLOT & Beyond!

The event takes place from 3:00 - 4:00 PM EDT on April 21. This online event has 3 sections: I. Overview Currently available collections & repositories of instructional resources, with an annotated list of especially interesting/useful ones. II. Intro to MERLOT “Best of breed” of currently available collections (referatories). Includes: * How to get and take advantage of free “membership” * How to find, assemble, annotate, and share focused selections of instructional resources. * How to use “feed” (RSS, etc.) options to get automatic updates of various parts of MERLOT. Participants will move beyond simple browsing of the MERLOT Website to explore ways the Website supports community-building within the disciplines. First, participants will become MERLOT members, and then explore how the Member Directory can identify potential collaborators. Next, participants will practice the procedure for contributing materials – the first step by which MERLOT disseminates learning objects and confers professional recognition through peer review. Finally, participants will establish Personal Collections, individualized and annotated listings of learning objects of significance to the member. We will see how Personal Collections can be used to identify other members who share specific interests, and to invite others within the discipline to join in a collaborative activity. III. Dangerous Discussion Articulating the ways in which the development, availability and use of these collections and repositories can lead to a “Dangerous Discussion” – and how to reformulate the issues for more constructive dialogue. E.g.: * Is there a fundamental conflict between: A. Most faculty/professional development programs being supported WITHIN an institution vs. B. Many collections (repositories, referatories) being structured to be used by people within the same academic discipline independent of their institutional affiliation? * Is it realistic to organize faculty/professional development programs that focus on inter-institutional (disciplinary) cohorts? * Is it feasible or desirable to develop a comprehensive collection of instructional resources?

Merlot workshop: Building a Community of Content Developers with OpenCourse.org

The contribution of social software to education is the emergence of virtual communities devoted to the collaborative construction and sharing of knowledge. Nowhere is the need for this greater than in the development of reusable educational content, a labor-intensive process of staggering magnitude. This workshop will discuss factors critical for the success of such "open course" collaborations, and will guide participants through the process of creating one of their own on OpenCourse.Org, a free and open platform designed to support virtual teams developing reusable learning assets. It is a hosted site and so there is no software to install. It is a freeze-dried online collaboratory: just add developers and stir!
